This building built in 1746 hosted the central hospital of the city of Santa Marta for more than two centuries. He was treated in its early stages by the religious order of the San Juan de Dios, hence its name, and later, in 1880 was under the care of the sisters of the Presentation of the Blessed Virgin of Tours. In 1991, when he completed the construction of the new central hospital of Santa Marta, this republican style building was abandoned for almost 10 years. He was subsequently declared of Cultural Interest of national character” and in 2002 was created the corporation San Juan de Dios, with the objective of restoring it and convert it into a cultural center and academic. Today it works there, the Ethnographic Museum in part of the building and the rest of the building is abandoned.
