This building built in 1746 hosted the central hospital of the city of Santa Marta for more than two centuries. In 1991, when he completed the construction of the new central hospital of Santa Marta, this republican style building was abandoned for almost 10 years. He was subsequently declared of Cultural Interest of national character” and in 2002 was created the corporation San Juan de Dios, with the objective of restoring it and convert it into a cultural center and academic. Today it works there, the Ethnographic Museum in part of the building and the rest of the building is abandoned. This staircase connects the two floors of the building with the terrace from which one has a privileged view of the bay of Santa Marta.
